Aso Oke

Aso Oke, pronounced ah-SHOW-kay, is hand loom woven cloth from Nigeria.  The Yoruba tribe of south-west Nigeria are the original weavers of this textile. The woven strips produced are typically sewn together to make traditional clothing. These are worn on special occasions such as coronations, festivals and weddings. Nevertheless, it is a great choice for many varied applications.

There is a tradition of strip woven textiles in Africa and in West Africa in particular. Kente from Ghana, Akwete from Eastern Nigeria, Faso Dan Fani from Burkina Fasso and so on. Aso oke is quite a thick, durable fabric similar in weight to denim or canvas and therefore ideal for upholstery, bags, soft furnishing and the like. Additionally, it works well as a trim.
