The Turkish Coat is a favorite with quilters and clothing artists. It originated in Central Asia, where it is would typically be made in brilliant silks and floral cottons. The boot-length reversible coat pattern is perfect for inventive fabric combinations. The coat hangs closed in the front without fastenings. It features a quilted or trapunto border at the hem, neckline and front opening. The boarder finish is typically echoed in the cuffs and welts over hand-slits, which are common in traditional Turkish outerwear instead of pockets. The sleeves are roomy and slightly tapered and the coat has underarm gussets and side panels.
Instructions for trapunto designs are included for all borders and for a decorative square patch at the side hemline (it can be extended over the entire coat if desired). The body of the coat can be hand or machine quilted as well as the boarders. A simple-sew version of the coat is also included and can be made with pre-quilted fabric.
Separate cutting lines are given for all sizes and the length can be adjusted as needed.
This is a paper pattern and is sized from XSMALL to 3XL. Sizing and Yardage charts can be seen in the images.
Medium-weight, soft fabrics such as broadcloth, silk, linen, or lightweight wool. The coat’s segmented design makes it easy to work in small pieces of your handwoven or vintage fabrics.
