Adire Fabric, Red Batik

Hand-drawn design
Wax resist technique
Width- 48 inches (1.2 metres)
Made in Nigeria

This red batik fabric is a modern design twist on traditional African tie-dye fabric. This red batik is hand-drawn and hand-dyed in Nigeria and consists of traditional Yoruba symbols each with a name and story. The stories are often words of advice from the elders, or a means of documenting social, economic and environmental conditions. The fabric is therefore like a piece of Yoruba art.

The fabric is 48 inches in width and you can choose between two lengths. Either a 2.4 yard (2.2 metre) length or a 4.8 yard (4.4 metre) length. To give you an idea of the scale of the patterns, a tape measure is shown in the last image with units displayed in inches. Each ‘rectangle’ in the fabric design measures approximately 12 x 15 inches.

KINDLY NOTE: We photograph the fabric in natural daylight and make every effort to represent the colours as accurately as possible, nevertheless colours may display differently depending on the monitors/screens they are viewed on.

Also, if you have purchased this fabric before, it will not be exactly the same as the one shown. Due to the unpredictable and organic nature of the dyeing process of batik, the outcome often varies.
