Sewing patterns for African fabric: 5 best patterns for summer tops
Spring is finally here in the UK and you may be thinking about adding some versatile tops to your handmade wardrobe. We have some suggestions for some of the best sewing patterns for summer tops using African fabrics.
We have chosen simple patterns that are suited to beginner skills and are versatile enough to the paired with trousers, jeans and skirts. They are also great for layering so are not restricted to any particular season.
Most of out prints and batiks are 100% cotton and soft, making them wearable and comfortable.
I AM PAN
For a slightly more tailored look, the I am Pan is the one for you. As well as cottons, this would also work well with denim, jersey, viscose and more.
AVAILABLE SIZES: Size EU 36 to 46. This is the equivalent of UK Sizes 8 to 18 and US Sizes 4 to 14.
This would be fantastic in a shweshwe print (which does have a soft denim like quality to it). You would need less than 2 yards for this pattern and can make a top in 2 metres of shweshwe with some fabric left over.
THE CUFF TOP
The cuff top by the Assembly line is a simple straight fitting top that closes at the back with a simple keyhole opening and a button for the larger sizes or a boat neck for the smaller sizes.
AVAILABLE SIZES: The pattern has two size ranges- Extra Small to Large and Extra Large to 4XL.
This would look great in an ankara print and the most fabric you would need would be 2 yards in any of the sizes.
I AM CLOCHETTE
I am Clochette is an elegant twist on the classic t-shirt, with the shoulder pleat across the front. You can make it as a long or short-sleeve t-shirt. This top has the bonus of having no fastenings!
AVAILABLE SIZES: Size EU 36 to 46. This is the equivalent of UK Sizes 8 to 18 and US Sizes 4 to 14.
This would look great in an ankara print or an adire and the most fabric you would need would be 2 yards in any of the sizes or 2.5 yards if you would like a long-sleeved version.
THE FLORENCE
The Florence by Merchant and Mills has a floatier vibe with soft high low gathers.
It has the added bonus of having a dress version which is also a great summer garment.
AVAILABLE SIZES: The pattern has two size ranges: UK Size 6 to 18 and UK Size 18 to 28.
Again you would only need about 2 yards of fabric for this top and it would be just so so beautiful in a cotton batik.
THE COLLINS TOP
The Collins top is a loose-fitting trapeze-shaped top. It is one of those shapes that is flattering and forgiving at the same time. It has a high-low hem and round neck and closes with a button and loop.
The pattern has two versions; one with a three-piece raglan sleeve designed with extra volume and neckline finished with bias binding. The other version is sleeveless, and the neckline and armholes are finished with an all-in-one facing.
You could have lots of fun with mixing colours even fabric. Great for stash busting or playing with colour-blocking.
As Ankara has a soft but crisp feel, this top would make a stunning summer top. It would hold the shape beautifully. Just be sure to use a print with a small motif to avoid worrying about pattern-matching.
So that is our round up of tops that would look great in African fabric. It is an easy way to add a splash of bold colour to your wardrobe without having to worry about wearability. Even just a pair of jeans would be the perfect match.
