Andrea Chapelle is the bespoke kilt maker behind Acme Atelier. There is something so special about her kilts, each one is a work of art and look as though they were made with such love and care. Even more interesting is her contemporary approach to the use of textiles. The combinations; colour and texture are beautiful. As a Nigerian that wore a Black Watch tartan kilt as school uniform, I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the use of the strip fabric from Nigeria, Aso-oke, feature in a number of her creations. They also sometimes incorporate batik and wax print fabrics. It is as lovely ‘marriage’ as though that is where they always wanted to be! It just works.
My passion is to uphold this historic craft skill, whilst fusing it with contemporary design and promote a responsible, resourceful means of production, on a small, sustainable scale.

Then came this very special piece shown above that actually just made me stop in my tracks. Do go and read the beautiful story behind its creation in the Kilt gallery where you will see other examples of Andrea’s work. I am also a lover of denim (its those selvedges) and having never seen a denim kilt, I feel like it is what is missing from my life. I am joking but how many times and ways can I say I am taken by these creations. Textures, contracts, bold colours. These are all elements I love and why I am such a fan.
Head over to www.acmeatelier.co.uk to see what I am talking about. You just might have found that special commission you have been looking for. I have something in mind myself. Enjoy the rest of the week and have a great weekend.
