I am a fan of simplicity, there is elegance in simplicity. In addition, it serves as a good backdrop for something elaborate. Our fabrics are a good example. They are often bold and bright and therefore work very well with simple garments, accessories and so on. You can let the fabric do all the work.

The Maker’s Atelier
The Maker’s Atelier design patterns that are distilled and refined takes of current fashion trends to create wearable and stylish garments.
Frances Tobin, the designer and owner believes that simple shapes, in the right fabrics, make the most successful clothes. This she further explores with fabric and construction variations in both the brands journal and quarterly magazine.
I recently made a TMA V-neck shift dress in a mostly black shweshwe fabric and will be posting it on the blog soon.
Sewing with Style
The current Summer edition 2022 looks at the history of wax cloth by Jo Andrews of Haptic and Hue, a selection of Maker’s Atelier patterns made in wax prints and shweshwe as well as accessories incorporating Aso-Oke. I absolutely love to see what the fabric is transformed into and this collection is just cool. Colourful, versatile and wearable.
There is also a conversation with yours truly, me! I talk about why I started Urbanstax and how I approach sourcing and selling the fabric.
If that doesn’t tempt you enough, there is the bonus of the Gathered Summer Top pattern included along with making instructions which also include making it into a dress version.
