Beautiful Blue Etu Aso Oke
You may already know about our love for the Yoruba woven cloth, Aso oke.
It is a handwoven strip cloth from Nigeria. This textile is woven in narrow strips which are sewn together to make traditional clothing. We believe in the idea that it can be used in many interesting new ways, not just as clothing. It is a great choice for things like cushions, quilts, totes, clutches, belts, table runners and more.
Types of Aso Oke
Aso-oke was traditionally available in three main colours. Blue, magneta and Beige. The blue version is known as Etu.
Etu is a deep blue, indigo dyed cloth often with very thin light blue stripes. Etu is the Yoruba word for guinea fowl, and the cloth is said to resemble the colour of the bird’s plumage.
Although Aso-oke is now available in almost any colour you can imagine and in an unlimited combination of colours, we do stock designs that harken to the original Etu Aso Oke designs. These tended to be simple, yet striking and quite minimalist an aesthetic.
Check out some of our selection below which are modern versions of the original Etu Aso Oke designs.
We of course have a huge range Aso-oke designs available in many other colours too. Do check out our Aso Oke Shop for more. You could also drop us a line if you have any questions.
