4 versatile quilted jacket patterns
A nice quilted jacket or coat is just one of those pieces that is a wardrobe staple. It is the perfect transitional piece when the weather starts to change; think Sping and Autumn when you start to need an extra layer. Depending on design and shape, quilted jackets and coats can also be easily layered under a larger coat for the much colder weather.
They also lend themselves to personalisation and your creativity. You don’t even have to be a quilter as some of the patterns have great instructions for beginner sewists. They can be made in various fabrics and some of the patterns offer many variations such as length, pocket style, front closures and the like.
The warm layer: Batting- This is the key to your quilted jacket. Choose a high quality batting in cotton, wool, bamboo, or a blend. You will choose the thickness based on how warm you want your jacket to be.
Here are a few of our favourite sewing patterns.
THE TAMARACK JACKET
The Tamarack Jacket by Grainline Studio offers two quilting designs. You can of course design your own to make your own one-of-a-kind jacket. It is designed with straight seams, basic quilting, and welt pockets and finished with bias binding.
Suitable Fabrics: Light to mid-weight cotton, linen, chambray and so on.
If you choose to make it in one of our prints or batiks, you will need about 3 yards for the outer fabric and 3 yards for the lining fabric.
Check out our very own make in the images below. This version is made using an Adire fabric on the outside and some Ankara print scraps for the lining fabric. It was a really fun pattern to work with and the instructions were clear and easy to follow.
BIBI QUILTED JACKET
The Bibi quilted jacket by Sewgirl is a lined, lightweight, generous fitting jacket. It features curved side vent details and has sleeves that you can roll back. It has two quilted patch pockets and is fastened with five 25mm (1″) buttons, however snap fasteners or ties can also be used. Again, you have a choice of two quilt designs; criss cross or tramlines, available with the pattern. Pre-quilted fabric or patchwork fabric are good alternatives.
This is an easy project to make and you can get further guidance at Sewgirl blog- www.sewgirlblog.com/2023/03/08/bibi-quilted-jacket/ where you can see step by step photos showing how the jacket is made.
Suitable fabrics: Outer and lining-any light to medium weight cotton fabric.
HOVEA JACKET & COAT
The Hovea jacket is a loose fitting drop shoulder jacket or coat. Easily personalised to your style with options for multiple lengths; deep angled feature pockets; unlined, full lining or quilted options; and belt or tie closures.
Suggested Fabrics: Light to medium weight fabrics: cotton, linen, chambray are recommended for the quilted versions. Pre-quilted fabrics also suitable for all versions.
Again if your are using any of our prints or batiks, the most you would need would be 3 yards for the outer fabric and 3 yards for the lining fabric.
TURKISH COAT
The Turkish Coat by Folkwear patterns is for a long quilted coat that originated from Central Asia, and would typically have been made in brilliant silks and floral cottons. It is boot-length and reversible so could be a truly showstopping coat. The coat hangs closed in the front without fastenings. It has spacious sleeves which are slightly tapered and the coat has underarm gussets and side panels.
You could quilt your coat or follow the instructions for a simple-sew version of the coat using pre-quilted fabric.
Suggested fabrics: Medium-weight, soft fabrics such as broadcloth, silk, linen, or lightweight wool. As the design is segmented, you could incorporate different fabrics you already have in your stash.
Have you made a jacket or coat with any of there patterns? Do you have a favourite pattern that we haven’t mentioned? If so, do share.
